Board of Directors Meeting
1 November 2017

  1. The Board of Directors meeting for the High Country Military Officers Association, Inc. was called to order by CAPT Fred Schmitt, USCG, (Ret), President of the Association, at 1725 at the Sagebrush Restaurant in Boone, North Carolina.

    The Board Meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance.

  4. Approval of Minutes:

  5. A motion of Approval for the minutes of the October 2017 Board of Directors meeting was unanimously approved.

  6. Treasurer's Report: LTC Ed Groff, Treasurer

  7. Accounts status as of 01 November 2017
    1. Chapter Checking Account -      $3,236.38
    2. Chapter Scholarship Account -   $3,309.48
    3. Total -                                          $6,545.86

    4. Expenses (since last report):
      1. $1,360.00 - Casa Rustica Catering - Annual Membership Dinner.
      2. $10,000.00 set aside for veteran's memorial.

    5. Revenue (since last report):
      1. $22.00 - Nicholas Katers Annual Dues.
      2. $9.70 - Interest income from both accounts.

  8. Old and Standing Business:

    1. Veterans Memorial Update - LtCol Brudzinski filled in for COL Covington and provided an update on progress with the Veterans Memorial project. Of special mention is the opportunity to apply for a $50,000 grant from the state of North Carolina. LtCol Brudzinski and CAPT Schmitt are on it. The successful artist selected to construct the approved Memorial Design will be present at the Boone Mall for the Veterans Day commemoration.

    2. New Banners: LtCol Brudzinski has secured new banners for the VETERANS MEMORIAL project and for the High Country Chapter -- at steep discounts! Banners will be publicly posted as appropriate.

    3. STRIKES FOR TROOPS FUNDRAISNG EVENT: MAJ Bob Gibbard briefed the Board on plans for the November 5 bowling event. CAPT Schmitt will help with registration.

  9. New Business:

    1. General Membership Meeting and swearing in of new officers was held October 27, 2017 at the Fairway Café. Two new members of the Board of Directors are now aboard, Jim Tabor and Ted Alley. Nick Katers was welcomed as a new member of the High Country Chapter. Fond farewells were extended to Mike and Ginny Halus who are re-locating.

    2. Preparations for Veterans Day Celebration: Planning is complete for the November 11 event at Boone Mall. The Boone Community Band will begin at approximately 1030. Members are encouraged to attend and help set up chairs for 400 guests. Please be there by 0900 hours.

    3. North Carolina Council of Chapters 4th Quarter Meeting will be held at Fort Bragg November 17-18. A volunteer is needed to replace CAPT Schmitt.

    4. High Country Chapter Holiday Dinner Planning: 1st VP Chuck Rhodes is working on details at a variety of locations and venues. Subsequently, CAPT Rhodes developed a fine opportunity at Appalachian Ski Mountain. Our Holiday Party is scheduled for the evening of December 8.

    5. Pancake Breakfast Fund Raiser Redux: David Buchanan at BBQ-BURGERS & BREWS has agreed to host our pancake breakfast event in March 2018. CAPT Schmitt is coordinating basic details; planning will develop early next year. The 3rd weekend in March is the favored date for the event.

    6. Announcements and Discussion: MAJ Bob Gibbard discussed the attractive and highly successful chapter newsletter which he produces. Publication will be changed to a bi-monthly schedule.

  10. Adjournment:  There being no further business, the Board of Directors meeting of the High Country Military Officers Association, Inc. was adjourned at 1820 to meet again on 6 December 2017 or at the call of the President.
