The High Country Chapter of the MOAA was formed in 2004 and serves Avery, Mitchell, and Watauga counties.

The Military Officers Association of America is a non-profit veterans' association dedicated to maintaining a strong national defense and to preserving the earned entitlements of members of the uniformed services and their families and survivors. Membership is open to those who hold or have ever held a warrant or commission in any component of the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Public Health Service, or NOAA and their surviving spouses.
The High Country Chapter has been awarded the MOAA 5-Star Level of Excellence Chapter recognition.  5 Star Recognition Icon

Here is a link to our current fund-raising project - the sale of insulated mugs with our High Country Chapter logo. We are offering these at $30 a piece or 2 for $50. Not only are they attractive and very functional but you would be helping the chapter with your donation. Thank you for considering this important donation to our chapter.

Over the previous 15 years, the High Country Chapter has helped coordinate activities among the various veterans-oriented groups for Memorial Day and Veterans Day. At each event we typically have 400-500 attendees in the Boone Mall. In an effort to give our attendees more time to gain comfort and confidence as we emerged from restrictions previously associated with Covid, we decided to hold another smaller ceremony for the 2021 Memorial Day. Although we had a smaller ceremony, we were still able to have a moving experience in honor of Memorial Day. Please check out our ceremony in 2020 at 2020 Memorial Day Ceremony. And, the ceremony for Veterans Day was also held it at the Veterans' Memorial. Both ceremonies were done along with the Watauga Community Band. The Memorial Day event was recorded by Steve Franks, with the Watauga Community Band. He was able to interleave associated video and audio clips to create a very moving video. 2020's Veterans Day event was recorded by ASU TV including pre-recorded music from the Watauga Community Band. Please take a look at that video here: 2020 Veterans Day Ceremony. We tried to hold our ceremony For the 2021 Veterans Day in the Boone Mall but needed to, once again, use the Veterans Memorial in downtown Boone. Optimistically, we hope to have our Memorial Day ceremony in the Boone Mall and we invite you to take part in this recognition in May of 2022.

Leading up to the 2021 Veterans Day ceremony, one of our members, Lance Campbell LTC, USA (Ret), was interviewed on the local radio station (WATA). Please listen to his interview here.
