Watauga County Veterans' Memorial

Our MOAA Chapter members realized that our County does not have a Memorial to recognize and pay tribute to our Veterans. We are proud to announce a major project to establish a Veterans' Memorial in downtown Boone, NC.

Our purpose is to create a unique and memorable Memorial to reflect the dedication, patriotism and sacrifice our citizens have made in the defense and preservation the the freedoms we have today. Thanks to the generosity of the Town of Boone Mayor and Town Council , a site adjacent to Town Hall on King Street, has been set aside for the location of the Watauga County Veterans' Memorial. This location will provide the highest visibility to our citizens, students and our visitors.

We need and ask for your generous support in providing funds to establish the Memorial. We will create a Memorial that will reflect the traditions of the High Country and our dedication to the men and women who served our Country in all branches of the Armed Forces from the Revolutionary War to the current conflicts.

Design Selection:

The High Country Chapter MOAA and the Town of Boone are pleased to announce their design selection. Banner Elk native Suzie Hallier's proposal "Time and Honor" has been selected as the winning design.

The structure is in the shape of an ellipse and, according to Ms. Hallier is "meant to draw the viewers into a reflective state." The Memorial will be constructed out of stainless steel and Core-TEN materials and will be approximately 8 feet tall, which will allow viewers to fully immerse themseleves inside the monument. The words "Duty. Honor. Country." will be engraved on the main structure. The ellipse ends with five directional pillars for the five different service branches: Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard. The 3 kneel walls will display plaques reflecting the 8 wars/conflicts, and recognize our veterans and our donors.

The Town of Boone will work with Ms Hallier on the design of space around the Memorial, including lighting and landscaping to make this a Veterans' Memorial that is profound and will harmonize with the beauty and color of the downtown area.

This is the Site where the memorial will be constructed.
